I ordered this for my 2 1/2 year old grandson. We keep it on the windowsill, right next to Grandma and Grandpa's his and her binoculars. We all watch the birds in our backyard together. They are adjustable to the width of the eyes, so they can be used by almost any size toddler. We are having to teach our grandson to not press the binoculars into his eyes, but rather to look through the lens. lol. We must supervise his use of them now, but he will get the hang of it. Exit pupil is defined as the diameter of the objective lens divided by the magnification and expressed in mm. (e.g. a 8x40 will give an exit pupil diameter of 5mm). Remember not to expect too much performance from an 8×25 or 10×25 pocket monocular though! These little monoculars have good power but a very limited view because of their small lens. You will need to first identify your subject and then use the monocular in a “point and shoot” manner. They can also be difficult to use due to their very small eyecup. If you want to enjoy a wider, sharper and brighter image, then you should always opt for a 30mm to 42mm monocular.

Some monoculars are filled with nitrogen to keep out hydrogen and oxygen, which can form condensation inside the device and cause rust. As long as the structural integrity of the device is intact, the nitrogen prevents internal fogging. Some cheap monoculars are not fog-proof. Internal fogging can be frustrating and might eventually cause damage. It's a question of balancing price against performance.

Binoculars use either roof or Porro prisms. Roof-prism or DCF (Dach Center Focus) models have overlapping prisms, while Porro prism (ZCF or Zeiss Center Focus) have staggered ones. The DCF arrangement produces slim, straight H-shaped instruments with eyepieces directly behind objective lenses, while ZCF models are conical or M-shaped instruments.
