Welcome to the website of Bob “the Birdman” Dunlap!

In the later years of his life, legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh once said, “I realized that if I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes.” A powerful statement, coming from the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In the end it was Mother Nature, and not the triumph of twentieth-century technology, that inspired the pilot of the Spirit of St. Louis.

Birds inspire me as they did Lindbergh. From an early age I found something intriguing about the birds in my family’s backyard; that intrigue has been nurtured over the years by myself and others, ultimately becoming the full-fledged passion that it is today. I’ve traveled throughout much of North America observing birds in their natural habitats, and in doing so I’ve become intimately familiar not only with the birds themselves but also with the flora and fauna with which they share the natural landscape.

As a birder I’ve found that the greatest joy comes from sharing my experiences with others, and thus this website is a means of sharing my passion with you. Here you can view my nature photography and read some articles, essays, and even poetry that I’ve written on birding and other nature-oriented topics. This website is for birders and non-birders alike, for those who enjoy the outdoors or can only stay close to home, for anyone and everyone. My mission is to inspire, and for you to understand at least a little of what makes me Bob the Birdman.
